Chinese President Xi Jinping said promoting supply-side structural reform in agriculture will be the main theme in next year's rural and agricultural work.
China will encourage new growth engines in agriculture and rural areas to improve productivity and competitiveness , said Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee, held ahead of the central rural work conference.

China will promote intensive agricultural development to help reduce poverty and facilitate urbanization to benefit ordinary rural households, Xi added.
The roles of the government and the market should be coordinated in guiding agricultural production and improving industry and product mix , and innovation by local governments should be encouraged, Xi said.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang made similar points at an executive meeting of the State Council, urging governments to accelerate modernization of agriculture and promote innovation and entrepreneurship in rural areas.
As agriculture was overlooked in the country's supply-side structural reform, the prices of agricultural products were negatively affected by reforms of other industries like the real estate and manufacturing, said Li Guoxiang , a researcher at the Rural Development Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Li Guoxiang said a new pricing mechanism for agricultural products is key to promoting agricultural reform, adding that the government should not intervene in the pricing, and subsidies should not be correlated with prices.
"The government should give play to the market forces to avoid overproduction," Li Guoxiang told the Global Times.
Farmers and college graduates should be encouraged to participate in the reform and agricultural technology innovation in a bid to make domestic agricultural products more competitive and safer, Li Guoxiang added.
As reform is crucial to the sector's long-term growth , no disruption will be tolerated, said the statement after the central rural work conference.
